Bites from Milwaukee’s best restaurants, a bike emporium and a celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach are on the calendar this month.

OPENS MARCH 1 | JAMES MAY GALLERY

Barbara Campbell Thomas’ shapes made of acrylic paint and fabric are at once amorphous and definite – like reality bending over space and time. Her art will be paired with works by Amy Sacksteder, whose paintings also stretch across dimensions. 

2. I Wanna Fly

MARCH 1-10 | FLORENTINE OPERA CENTER 

Milwaukee Opera Theatre presents an evening of solo-singing from Lynette Ryan. The lineup includes American composer Maury Yeston’s  December Songs and a new piece by writer Gwen Rice and composer Matt Zembrowski.

3. Momentum

MARCH 2 | BAUMGARTNER CENETER 

Watch the next generation of Milwaukee Ballet dancers. This showcase of young talent from the ballet’s Second Company presents classic and contemporary works. Graduates from the Second Company make up 60% of the main roster. 

4. The Chosen

MARCH 5-31 | MILWAUKEE REP 

This stage adaptation of the classic novel by Chaim Potok chronicles the lives of two Jewish boys and their differing backgrounds and perspectives against the backdrop of World War II and the creation of modern-day Israel. 

5. Taste of Milwaukee

MARCH 7 | MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER 

Get ready to grub – locally. This annual gathering of Milwaukee restaurants and caterers convenes to benefit Broadscope Disability Services. Along with serving favorite dishes from each spot, the fundraiser will also include a silent auction and live entertainment. 

6. The Mountaintop

MARCH 8-24 | MILWAUKEE CHAMBER THEATRE 

On the night before his assassination in Memphis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. meets a kind, mysterious stranger. Described as “absorbing” by The Washington Post, this play reflects on King’s fate and enduring legacy. 

7. Food & Froth

MARCH 9 | MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM 

Have you ever wanted to sip a cold one with a T. rex? You can at the Milwaukee Public Museum’s annual fundraiser, which lets attendees tour its collections while sampling snacks and beers from over 60 breweries and local restaurants. 

8. Bembé’s Latino Carnaval

MARCH 10 | MITCHELL STREET ARTS 

Revel in the Afro-Latino rhythms of youth and adult percussionists from Milwaukee’s Bembé Drum & Dance. The celebration will include snacks, a cash bar, arts and crafts, and special dance performances.

9. Clue

MARCH 12-17 | MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER 

Six guests start sleuthing when the owner of Boddy Manor turns up dead. Based on the 1985 film, in turn based on the classic board game, Clue is a comedic whodunit with plenty of twists and turns. 

10. Milwaukee Bike Bazaar

MARCH 16 | RIVERSIDE UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL 

In need of a new bike? Milwaukee Recreation hosts this emporium of new and used bicycles, parts and equipment for beginners and seasoned cyclists. Proceeds benefit the Milwaukee Recreation Mountain Bike team. 

11. Olivia Rodrigo

MARCH 16 | FISERV FORUM

This 21-year-old singer and actor got her start on Disney shows before her breakout single “drivers license” made her a sensation. You can expect hits “good 4 u,” “vampire” and other cathartic ballads and satisfying takedowns. 

12. Wisconsin for Kennedy Book Talk

MARCH 19 | BOSWELL BOOK CO.

Before the RNC, learn how Wisconsin became a presidential battleground state. UW-Eau Claire professor and author BJ Hollars’ new book, Wisconsin for Kennedy, dives into this state’s critical role in John F. Kennedy’s campaign for the Democratic nomination. 

13. Ex Fabula’s 15th Birthday Bash

MARCH 21 | THE COOPERAGE

Ex Fabula – the arts nonprofit that champions personal storytelling – is throwing a party to celebrate its anniversary. The fundraiser will feature activities, a silent auction and a dance party to end the night.

14. Bach Fest

MARCH 22-24 | BRADLEY SYMPHONY CENTER

Happy birthday, J.S. Bach! Celebrate the timeless Baroque composer with two programs performed by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. The second lineup concludes with his Magnificat for choir and orchestra, which turned 300 last year. 

15. Julian Talamantez Brolaski

MARCH 23 | WOODLAND PATTERN BOOK CENTER

Julian Talamantez Brolaski is a Brooklyn-based poet and country singer whose work in both mediums explores lyricism within language. The writer will lead an in-person workshop on generative writing, which uses specific prompts to inspire creativity within limits. 

16. Giselle

MARCH 26 | PABST THEATER

This Romantic-era ballet tells of a young peasant who dies of heartbreak after discovering the true identity of her love. Giselle will be performed by the Grand Kyiv Ballet, which is made up of Ukrainian dancers. 

17. Sam Jay

MARCH 29-30 | MILWAUKEE IMPROV

Emmy-nominated writer and comedian Sam Jay takes the stage in Milwaukee fresh off her latest HBO special, Salute Me or Shoot Me. Her work often tackles race and gender issues with a compassionate lens.

18. Barely Civil’s Album Release

MARCH 31|CACTUS CLUB

Rock out to Milwaukee power-emo three-piece Barely Civil as they mark the release of their third album, I’d Say I’m Not Fine. Opening is Philadelphia/Washington D.C.-based alternative band Magazine Beach and local indie artist Known Moons. 

19. Deep Lake Future

CLOSES MARCH 30 | VAR GALLERY, 5TH STREET 

It’s the last month to dive into this immersive art installation! “Deep Lake Future” transports visitors to a surreal Milwaukee of the future, inundated with Great Lake flooding and invasive species. Traverse underwater passageways, discover strange creatures and learn a bit about sustainability.
