Your Guide to Shopping Local for Your Pet

Get the supplies your furry – or feathery, or scaly – friends need, while supporting area stores.

BY LINDSEY ANDERSON AND EVERETT EATON

Shopping local is important. Partly because it’s the neighborly thing to do. (We live in the Midwest, after all). And partly because its saves literally tons of water, and significantly reduces carbon emissions. So say no to Chewy and buy your next batch of pet food, or chew toy, from one of these local stores.

1. Bark n’ Scratch Outpost

5835 W. BLUEMOUND RD.

The owner of Bark n’ Scratch opened this Bluemound Heights store in 2006 because she was struggling to find foods that her beloved dog, Snowbelle, could eat. Since then, the shop has become a great resource for all-natural food and treats. The prices, especially on food, are competitive with big chains, and it offers free local delivery of purchases over $49.

2. Best Fish

1335 N. MARTIN LUTHER KING DR.

If aquariums are your thing, you’ll love this store. The dimly lit aisles are lined with beautifully designed and decorated aquatic habitats, available for purchase. Additionally, Best Fish carries food, accessories and both freshwater and saltwater species of fish. The knowledgeable staff is there to answer all your fishy questions.

3. Skilos: A Family Pet Store

2328 N. FARWELL AVE.

You can suds up your pooch at a self-service washing station, then pick up all the food, toys and accessories Fido needs at this new-ish East Side store, down the block from Whole Foods. The emphasis is on healthy brands for cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. Delivery available.

4. Hounds Around Town

505 E. SILVER SPRING DR., WHITEFISH BAY

What can’t you get at this suburban pet supply store? In addition to a wide selection of foods, treats and training supplies for dogs and cats, it also carries CBD treats made for canines who need to chill out a little. And you can find adorable puppy pastries (baked goods containing dog-friendly ingredients) near the front register. They’re endorsed by Lars, the store’s CFO (Chief Fetching Officer). Delivery available.

5. Mac’s Pet Depot Barkery

2197 S. KINNICKINNIC AVE.

This Bay View stalwart sells all the pet supplies you’d expect to see in a store its size. But it really sets itself apart from the rest of the retail pack with an excellent rewards program: Members can receive discounts on items bought in bulk and 10%-20% o food and supplies bought during a monthly Yappy Hour. Mac’s also works with two rescues, Winston’s Wishes and Rescue Gang, to help match locals with adoptable dogs and cats.
