Your Guide to Pi(e) Day in Milwaukee

Here are some local spots to get your pastry fill on Monday, March 14.

YEAH, PEOPLE REALLY celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π) with pie on 3.14. Because it’s fun! And delicious. I always advocate for pie, regardless of the day. But especially on Pi Day.

1. Honeypie

2643 S. KINNICKINNIC AVE. | 414-489-7437

Not only is this Bay View emporium offering slices and whole pies, the place is open for a rare Monday brunch, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. – which you can bookend with (what else?) a slice o’ pie. They make specialty, cream and fruit pies. I can’t tell you exactly which flavors will be available (and I can imagine they will be selling pretty quickly) but examples of flavors they do make include coconut cream, salted caramel, blueberry, apple-cherry, caramel apple, whiskey walnut pecan, bourbon fudge and banana cream.

2. The Bake Sale

6923 W. BECHER ST. | 414-543-4230

This West Allis spot – which sells baked goods from other local vendors and pies made in-house – is offering options for walk-in availability, including fruit and cream pies. Everyday flavors include chocolate, key lime, banana cream and apple cinnamon. Open Monday specifically for Pi Day, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

3. Mr. Dye’s Pies

8103 W. TOWER AVE. | 414-759-4992

This Milwaukee maker does luscious creations like sweet potato, N’awlins’ pecan, blueberry hill, key lime, brandy old fashioned cherry, and the Carver peanut butter pie. Find them Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

4. Elegant Farmer

Famous for its ultra-sweet Apple Pie Baked in a Paper bag, the baker is offering its paper bag pies for $3.14 through Monday. 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

5. National Bakery & Deli

3200 S. 16TH ST., 414-672-1620; 13820 W. GREENFIELD AVE., BROOKFIELD, 262-827-4097; 5637 BROAD ST., GREENDALE | 414-423-4620

The baker makes a number of fruit and cream pies such as double-crust cherry, apple dumpling, banana cream, Dutch apple, and lemon meringue. For Pi Day, National is partnering with the Wisconsin Bakers Foundation’s Pi for Peace fundraiser, which is donating $3.14 from every pie sold to the Ukraine Red Cross.

6. Hatched

This Brookfield-based maker sells its hand pies and other baked delights at several local coffee/drinking establishments – seriously spreading the pastry love. And owner Allison Cebulla is offering some rad flavors for Pi Day – for example, Bailey’s chocolate caramel (St. Patrick’s Day homage), blueberry lemon curd, funfetti (vanilla cream with sprinkles) and raspberry lime. You can find them at Vennture Brew Co. (5519 W. North Ave.), Canary Coffee Bar (720 N. Old World Third St.) and 1848 Coffee (13575 W. National Ave., New Berlin). Cebulla says Vennture Brew Co will also have slices of Hatched’s Fruity Pebbles Pie – a flavor that is also inspiring a new, soon-to-be-released Vennture beer.

7. SmallPie

2504 E. OKLAHOMA AVE. | 414-763-7067

This offshoot of Honeypie will have sweet and savory hand pies, and pie slices in various flavors. As at Honeypie, I can’t say which flavors they’ll have available on Monday, but just the possibilities give me big-time pie excitement. But I did see blueberry lemonade teased as a flavor on SmallPie’s Instagram …
