Your Guide to Astronomical Events to Watch for This Summer

Supermoons, a meteor shower and more reasons to go outside and look up on summer nights

“The moon’s not actually blue,” Milwaukee Astronomical Society’s Matthew Ryno says about the super blue moon, which occurs on Aug. 30.

Blue means there will be two full moons in one month (the first is Aug. 1); super refers to it being closer than usual to Earth, so it looks extra big.

Ryno is also looking forward to the Perseid meteor shower July 14-Sept. 1 – Harrington Beach and Ottawa state parks’ dark skies are prime viewing spots.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

This summer is a great time for observing the Milky Way, galaxies and nebulas. The best way to see them is with a telescope, and the society has many to share.

Stop by one of the summer observation nights on June 17, July 15 and Aug. 18 (milwaukeeastro.org) for the up-close perspective.

“There’s lots to nerd out about,” Ryno says.
