The man who started Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport’s concourse alphabet at C is Barry Bateman, who served as airport director for 31 years until retiring in 2014. The concourses used to be designated C-A-B from north to south.
“I thought this was odd because there was no logic for the passenger,” Bateman explains. But renaming concourses is costly to the airport and disruptive to airlines, so the less of that, the better.
“When we built the new main terminal between 1983 and 1985, I decided to re-letter the concourses to C, D and E, in that order. I left C intact and renamed A and B. It was simple logic.”
