Whitney Nettles’ Style Highlights Milwaukee’s Vintage Scene

Whitney Nettles’ Style Showcases Milwaukee’s Fabulous Vintage Scene

She likes to mix it up and get creative when putting together outfits like this one.

Whitney Nettles sees putting together an outfit as one of her many creative endeavors. The Milwaukee-based graphic designer, illustrator and muralist is inspired by the things she sees when she’s out and about, like when she’s searching for finds at local vintage shops.

“I’ll just be in an antique store and see colors together and be like, ‘Oh, those two colors would make a great outfit,’” she says. And when she’s putting together a look, she often starts with one item and builds the outfit around that.

She likes pairing things that normally wouldn’t go together, like adding a casual hat to a more elevated look or a leopard print jacket with a vest. “I’ve been pushing myself, trying to figure out how I can take things that are in my closet and mix them up a little bit and make them feel fresh.”

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Hat

This vintage Bucks hat was an online score. “I spend a lot of time late-night scrolling on eBay and Etsy, looking at cool vintage things.”

Shirt/Vest

Her biggest styling tip? “Don’t be afraid to play with proportions in layering a little bit.” She layered this Open Road Vintage beer patch vest over a locally thrifted button-down shirt.

Venture into Vintage

Looking to jump on the secondhand shopping train? “I absolutely love One Trick Pony. I found some of my favorite pieces from that flea market,” says Nettles. Check their Instagram for upcoming events.

Rings

Two of her favorite places to source jewelry are Milwaukee-based online boutique Bona Drag and local jeweler Lauren Landa.

Jeans

For this outfit, Nettles started with these oversized vintage jeans from Alive and Fine (2652 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.).

Coat

Another layer for the colder months, a leopard coat from Plume (3001 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.), one of Nettles’ favorite local spots to shop for vintage clothes.
