Where to Find Fireflies Near Milwaukee

Do you know which city nearby gets its name from a Potawatomi word meaning “fire that flies”?

It’s not really summer until you see those little yellow lights flickering outside. Fireflies are a magical part of the season. Did you know Wauwatosa, a city next door to Milwaukee, actually gets its name from a Potawatomi word meaning “fire that flies?” It’s one of the best spots for finding fireflies, and by late June, there are loads of them fluttering around the Menomonee River.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Check out Hart Park (7300 W. Chestnut St.), next to the Wauwatosa Village, to find floating, flickering clouds of the the little bugs. Feel free to catch some, but be gentle and release them right away – we want to make sure there are plenty of fireflies for years to come.
