When Are Milwaukee’s Beer Gardens Opening This Year?

Another beer garden season is upon us. Plan accordingly.

The recent popularity of public beer gardens is a testament to how skilled Milwaukeeans are when it comes to drinking beer outdoors. Here’s when you can plan on ushering in the 2019 season.

Note: Times and dates subject to change with the whims of local weather.

South Shore Terrace

2900 S. Shore Dr.
Opening: April 10

If you can’t wait until May, South Shore is betting against nature and opening really early. Head there for all sorts of Miller products and a picturesque beer drinking space just a stein’s throw (not recommended) from Lake Michigan.
Hours: Wed.-Fri. 4 to 10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hubbard Park Beer Garden

3565 N. Morris Blvd.
Opening: May 1

This woodsy getaway is just a few blocks south of busy Capitol Drive, but it’s hard to not feel nicely secluded here. Removal from the madding crowd is even better with a fresh Hacker-Pschorr weiss or New Glarus Spotted Cow.
Hours: Mon.-Fri. 3 to 10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun. noon to 10 p.m.

Estabrook Park Beer Garden

4600 Estabrook Dr.
Opening: May 2

The beer garden here opened in 2012 as the first public beer garden in the U.S. since Prohibition, and it ushered in a slew of others in the Milwaukee area. The theme is decidedly German, with patrons drinking .5 or 1-liter mugs of Hofbräu brews while eating sausages, schnitzel and pretzels.
Hours: Daily, noon to 10 p.m.

Whitnall Park Beer Garden

8831 N. Root River Pkwy.
Opening: May 3

Twenty-four tap handles provide more beer variety than most beer gardens, and that’s good news for everyone. The focus is mainly on local and Wisconsin craft beers. Whitnall Park provides a low-key spot to enjoy some very good beer.
Hours: Wed.-Fri. 4 to 10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Landing at Hoyt Park

1800 N. Swan Blvd.
Opening: May 15

The swanky, yacht-club-chic digs in Wauwatosa aren’t short on good beer choices. Plenty of Wisconsin craft beers — from the likes of New Glarus, Good City, City Lights, etc. — appear on the menu, as do pizza, pretzels and brats.
Hours: Wed.-Fri. 3 to 9 p.m.; Sat.-Sun. noon to 9 p.m.

Croatian Park Beer Garden

9100 S. 76th St.
Opening: May 23

Did someone say ćevapčići? You don’t find the delicious Croatian sausages everywhere. Nor do you find Karlovacko Pivo Pilsner pouring from the taps at other local beer gardens. Head to Franklin to enjoy this hidden gem.
Hours: Thurs. 5 to 10 p.m.

The Vine, Humboldt

3000 S. Howell Ave.
Opening: Late May

It’s formerly known as Milwaukee’s Craft Beer Garden at Humboldt Park (which was home to the awesome weekly local craft brewery tap takeover). This season the space has a fancy new name and will be serving four wines and four craft beers.
Hours: Tues.-Fri. 5 to 10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Traveling Beer Gardens

Opening: May 8

Sprecher Brewing has a pair of roving tap trucks that surely will make it to a park near you. The tours include live music and, of course, Sprecher beers. As an added bonus, the Iron Grate BBQ Food Truck will follow the Roll Out the Barrel Tour.
