Explore UW-Milwaukee’s Extraordinary Archive of Maps, Atlases and Globes

UWM’s American Geographical Society Library consists of nearly 2 million items!

Cartophiles – and anyone who can appreciate a good old-fashioned paper map – will delight in the collection on view at UW-Milwaukee’s American Geographical Society Library.

The trove, in toto, consists of over 635,000 maps, 15,000 atlases and 250 globes, with some extremely old relics on display, such as a medieval world map (mappa mundi) considered the finest in the Western Hemisphere.

The globes, dating from 1613 up to contemporary times, are especially fun, showing views of the world, the planets, the sky, etc., in languages ranging from Korean to braille. Open to the public Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Golda Meir Library, third floor, 2311 E. Hartford Ave.
