This spring, Erin Ridosko asked her fourth-grade civics class at Maple Avenue Elementary in Sussex to share their thoughts on why democracy is important. Here are some selections from their essays:
Brenna S.: Fairness matters when it comes to a democracy. Nobody gets to decide everything. Otherwise our world would be full of injustice. If you don’t vote, you should! You might think your small contribution does nothing. But what if everybody thought that? There would be no decision made.

Paige K.: It is important for a democracy to declare our freedom to let other people know we’re here, we’re speaking out, and we’re keeping our freedom.
Aarush G.: If you couldn’t share your opinion, how would you feel? I would feel angry that I didn’t have the power of what democracy gives me.
Kenley E. I have a hope for the future that all different types of people will live in peace. No more wars. The world should know better than to do this to people.
