Local artist Della Wells joined Milwaukee Magazine Editor and Publisher Carole Nicksin for a livestream lunch Monday.
Wells talked about her life and artistic career, and she showed a few examples of her collages and paintings.
Wells said she fully embraced her visual arts career in her early 40s, and her work has been displayed in galleries throughout the country. Her artistic media include collaging, painting and doll-making.
“When I start a collage, I don’t allow myself to get any new materials — I have to use to the materials at hand,” Wells said. “It forces me to be more creative.”
Wells said that her art is inspired by her childhood and personal experiences, as well as black history and folklore. She said that as a child, she thought a lot about the American Dream, and this has also influenced her work.
“We always talk about the American Dream, and to me the dream is what we make of what life has dealt us,” Wells said.
