This Bites: Mother’s Day Treats and the James Beard Awards

Winner chefs, arepas and treats!

The latest This Bites (on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee) veers from Monday’s night momentous James Beard Awards at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  My co-host Tarik Moody and I talk about the winners, and what was particularly compelling about this year’s recipients.

If you love corn tortillas and have never had an arepa, you need to try one. An arepa is a flat cake made of maize meal prepared by frying, steaming or baking. It’s topped with some kind of slaw, cheese, beans or meat. Amilinda (315 E. Wisconsin Ave.) is going to host an areparia of sorts on weekdays. You’ll learn more about that.

We finish with some suggestions to help show your mom how sweet she is. That includes the special pie flavors this weekend at Honeypie in Bay View and treats from the new Batches Bakery in the Third Ward.
