This Bites: International BBQ, Uptown Pho-nk and Pops

The food events and new businesses we’re thinking about, offered up with the usual dose of sincerity and MKE love.

On this week’s This Bites (8 a.m. Fridays on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee), Tarik Moody and I start with a few events happening this weekend (through Aug. 19). That would be Irish Fest on the Summerfest grounds ‒ where the food options are as plentiful as the coins inside a pot of gold ‒ and Zoo a la Carte at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The zoo event offers everything from empanadas and wood-fired pizzas to Vietnamese food.

We also run through the menu lineup at the Chef’s Counter at Mason Street Grill. It offers its own themed menu, which, for the next eight weeks, is International BBQ.  You can order Kalua pork and beef barbacoa flautas, along with charred shishito peppers.

Pete’s Pops celebrated its grand opening this weekend at 3809 W. Vliet St. While the special give-aways are now gone, the pops are a constant. Lots of cool flavors, too, including key lime pie, banana cream and, of course, avocado (one of Pete’s first flavors).

Finally, if the idea of pop-up pho is intriguing to you (it is to us), we’ll tell you about the pho event that Wisconsin-based SapSap is hosting on August 25 in Racine. “Uptown Pho-nk” features a menu of egg rolls, Lao-style grilled meats, pho and chocolate chia pudding.
