This Bites: Hidden Restaurants from ‘Hidden Milwaukee’

Off-the-beaten-path Milwaukee restaurants, the correct spelling of “Piggsville,” grilled spring rolls and the James Beard Awards.

This Bites, airing Friday mornings at 8 a.m. on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, covers topics near and dear to its hosts’ food-loving hearts. The hosts being 88Nine’s Tarik Moody and me, Milwaukee Magazine’s Ann Christenson.

On the April 28 episode, the topics du jour included the chart of off-the-radar food establishments appearing in “Hidden Milwaukee” (Mil Mag’s May cover story). Those venues include Amaranth Bakery (33rd and Lisbon) and the Valley Inn, near Miller Brewery in an area once called Piggsville.

We round out the segment with a local healthy food business called Funky Fresh Spring Rolls, plus grilled cheese and tomato soup and… the James Beard Foundation Awards, which were held May 1 in Chicago. Stream the episode here!

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
