This Bites: What You Need to Know About Milwaukee Comfort Food

On the latest This Bites (on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee) – and the first in 2020 – Tarik Moody and I talk about winter comfort food. It’s one of the components in our January cover story, “Winter Playbook.” I include some of my favorites, including the lemon-poppyseed pancakes from Cafe at the Plaza. There are sweet and savory options from places like Pastiche Bistro and Wine Bar

There may still be time to get in on event in Racine on Jan. 4. It’s the Lao Seoul Food Collaboration with Madison chef Tory Miller. This meal includes courses of Gochujang glazed pork ribs and New York strip bulgogi. Last I checked, a few reservation spots were still available. 

Also in Mil Mag’s January is a story on the gem of a counter-service restaurant in Brookfield Square called Arepa’s Place. The little spot specializes in the Venezuelan creation called an arepa, which is a corn cake with any number and combo of fillings – meats, cheeses, black beans, plantains, sauces. You’ll learn why this “sandwich” needs to be on your Milwaukee Bucket List. 

We finish up with a couple of development proposals. One is for a sober pizzeria in the Sherman Park area, and the other is for a food-tech incubator on the West Side.
