This Bites: Big Gig BBQ, and a New, Late-Summer Patio

Better late than never when it comes to patios.

On this week’s culinary podcast, as we like to call This Bites (on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee), Tarik Moody and I celebrate Labor Day weekend with words and suggestions and lots of outdoor activity. As you have undoubtedly noticed if you’ve been Downtown this week, there are a whole lotta hogs on the road from now until Labor Day. The city is hosting Harley-Davidson 115th anniversary events galore. We get you started with the foods available at Motor Bar & Restaurant and on the grounds of the H-D Museum (400 W. Canal St.).

On Sunday Sept. 2, the annual Big Gig BBQ at the Summerfest grounds offers BBQ from 15 vendors, including Maxie’s, Iron Grate BBQ, Saz’s and Smoke Shack.

In patio news (it may be almost September, but we’re not giving up on alfresco dining), View MKE – the new occupant of the old Wolf Peach digs in Brewers Hill – just debuted its blinged-out lower-level patio. The Back Yard, as they’re calling it, is open and offering light snacks and bevs from 2-5 p.m. every day, and showcasing the rolling bloody mary cart during weekend brunch.

And finally, stick around to hear about two food-related stories you should check out in MilMag’s September “Best Of” issue.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
