This Bites: A Special Dim Sum Night at Braise and More

Get your buns over to this dim sum pop-up.

Tarik Moody and I have a standing appointment every week to talk food. Only the mic is on and we’re doing our weekly dining segment on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee (Fridays, 8 a.m.). On our March 16 edition, we talk “finalists” – that’s the list of nominees for Best Chef: Midwest in the 2018 James Beard Foundation Awards. Two finalists from Milwaukee, three from Minneapolis. Who will win? We find out on May 7.

Who doesn’t love a good bun? Seriously. In Chinese dim sum, the baskets holding piping hot, savory, steamed or baked buns are what I look forward to most at this traditional brunch. On Wednesday, March 21 (starting at 6 p.m.), Braise (1101 S. Second St.) is serving four “rounds” of dim sum – first come, first served. We explain the premise.

The untimely passing of both Supper in the Shorecrest Hotel and Wolf Peach in Brewers Hill wind up the segment. Stream it here:

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
