It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Here’s where to celebrate in the city.

1. Mahjong and Japanese Buffet

MAY 12 FROM 5-8 P.M. | CUTE ROBOT JAPANESE KITCHEN

Celebrate AAPI with a game of mahjong and a Japanese buffet, featuring gyoza, beef curry, shoyu noodles, rice and salad at this pop up event hosted by Milwaukee Mahjong, ElevAsian and Cute Robot Japanese Kitchen. It’s $30 per person at the door only, and you must RSVP on Facebook here

2. Stronger Together: AAPI Heritage Celebration

MAY 15 FROM 5-8 P.M. | 511 N. BROADWAY  

The Wisconsin Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Hmong Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce are hosting an event to bring together entrepreneurs, community partners and allies for a night of connection and celebration of culture. This event will honor and uplift the voices and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders communities in Wisconsin. Enjoy remarks from business and community leaders, food and beverages representing AAPI flavors, heritage spotlights and networking opportunities. Reserve your seat online.

3. Asian Restaurant Week 

MAY 18-24 | MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Support Milwaukee’s AAPI-owned restaurants this month and all year long. ElevAsian has a list with over 100, if you need some inspiration for where to go, including Ni Burmese, Momo Mee, Maharaja, Hungry Sumo, Sinabro, EE Sane, Himalayan Yak, Xankia and more.

4. Learn About AAPI Heritage At Milwaukee Public Museum 

ALL MONTH ON WEEKDAYS | MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM 

Join museum educators at MPM on weekdays this month to learn more about AAPI history and culture. Topics include: the history of tattoos and the intricate styles of the Pacific Islands, how tea was grown in China and ended up becoming the second most popular drink in the world, how netsuke helped solve a widespread fashion problem in Japan 400 years ago, the history of origami and the importance of cranes across Asian cultures. 

5. Visit the AAPI Heritage Pop-Up Exhibit 

THROUGH MAY 30 | GOLDA MEIR LIBRARY 

Tour unique materials that highlight the diverse cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands at this pop-up exhibit.  

6. Asian Pacific Islander (API) Women’s Ball 

MAY 31 FROM 5:30-11 P.M. | DISCOVERY WORLD

The Hmong American Women’s Association is hosting its third annual Women’s Ball for Asian Pacific Islanders. This year, it is celebrating the 50th year that the Hmong community has been in the U.S. This event is open to guests 18 years and older. Wear your best formal wear and enjoy dinner, performances, guest speakers, and a silent auction while celebrating Milwaukee’s Hmong leaders that have fought and defended the API community throughout history.
