The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: June 24

We’re excited about Mini Fest, paninis, “The Bear” and more.

1. Make Art at Mini Fest!

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

Three words. Art making party. Do I really need to say more? Okay, fine I will elaborate. It turns out that Mini Fest is largely for kids and families, but if you’re like me and are a kid at heart (and just really love making art), this event is sure to be a blast. It’s happening this Sunday, June 30 at Zócalo Food Truck Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it’s going to be a day full of art workshops, vendors and food. A few folks from MilMag, including yours truly, will be there volunteering. I heard our station is going to have zine making and a photo op, so, ya know, be cool and stop by!

2. Get a Panini From Nehring’s Sendiks on Downer

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

Hello, $9 panini that will feed me for not one, but two lunches. Right in the middle of the deli counter at Nehring’s Sendik’s on Downer (2643 N. Downer Ave.) is where they put the prepared sandwiches and wraps. Not sure when I first discovered the ciabatta panini, pressed to order, but it has served me well off and on for a few years. Sandwich varieties include Figgy Goat, Southwest and Cheesy Beef, to name a few. I keep going for the roasted chicken with provolone, tomatoes and pesto aioli. You definitely want it pressed – so the cheese is melted and the bread is crusty and a little oily. Huge and delicious!

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Catch The Hold Steady at Summerfest

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

The best part of Summerfest as a casually avid music fan is the chance to catch a show by a band you’ve always kind of meant to see for basically free. (There are so many ways to get into Summerfest for free.) For me, this year, that band is The Hold Steady. I got into this band – essentially the house party band of the Twin Cities – just as other interests usurped my passion for music. Now I’m back, baby, and there are few acts that speak to me more than a band with nakedly Midwestern values riffing on disaffected small towns, parties that go too far and the wreckage of their aftermath. Craig Finn and company take the Miller Lite Oasis stage at 6:30 on Saturday, and I can’t imagine a better combination of time, day and stage sponsor for this band.

4. Get a MPL Library Card!

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

With how rainy it’s been lately, I might as well bake some indoor plans into my schedule. And you know what I haven’t done yet? Gotten my library card. (Lately, I’ve had much difficulty having fun.) So, I’m swinging by the Central Library to pick mine up, and I’m already excited by the possibilities. There are books, of course, but you’re telling me I can get free admissions? I can rent cornhole? I’d say consider me sold, but it’s free.

5. Watch Season 3 of “The Bear”

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Jeremy Allen White is 5 foot 7. Because of this, I must support him in his endeavors. We diminutive men have only each other to rely on in this cruel, tall man’s world. Also, his TV show “The Bear” is phenomenal. I’m not breaking any news here, but the show is one of the best things on TV – arguably the best now that “Succession” and “Better Call Saul” are over. If you like frenetic energy, delicious food, loud, Italian families and/or crying, you gotta see it. And season three airs on Thursday night! I already canceled all my plans to sit down and watch. (Just kidding – I didn’t have any plans.)
