Editors’ Picks: Week of Oct. 3 | Milwaukee Magazine

The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Oct. 3

Check out Slow Wave Vintage, Elsa’s on the Park and more.

1. Check Out Slow Wave Vintage

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

This past Friday I checked out Slow Wave Vintage during Bay View Gallery Night, and it’s such a cool space! Located in the Hyde House, it was a bit of a maze to find it but it’s such a beautiful location, filled with plants, sunlight and, of course, lots of vintage pieces. There was a great curated selection of clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories. They’re open Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., by appointment or at events, and if you like shopping vintage, I recommend checking them out!

2. Watch “Reservation Dogs”

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

If you’ve heard of this FX black comedy series, which just wrapped its second season and is streamable on Hulu, it’s probably because it’s the first American television show with nearly entirely Indigenous talent – writers, directors and cast. If you haven’t, skoden – it’s so good. It takes less than 10 minutes of the pilot to shape the central characters of Elora, Bear, Cheese and Willie Jack – teenagers in a small, Native town in Oklahoma – into full, round and complicated kids you just love. Themes will be familiar to those who grew up or spent a lot of time in rural Wisconsin – particularly that conflict between wanting to get out of this dumpy place and leaving everything you know and care about. But the show, of course, centers Native culture and deftly skewers its stereotypes. I cannot render judgment on the show’s authenticity, but it is a wholly unique, refreshing and endearing depiction.

3. Soak Up the Artsy Ambiance at Elsa’s

ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR

The art installations inside Elsa’s rarely disappoint, and the current one is no exception. Video screens mounted on the north wall of the main room show subway scenes, while a projected fire escape scene accents one of the south walls – in toto, a very urban, in-the-thick-of-NYC feel. Plus, Elsa’s is one of the best spots for upscale bar food and people-watching that I know of. I would normally say the menu never changes, but it did – just a tad. My grouper grilled in teriyaki butter was good, albeit on the healthier side, and something that escaped my notice on previous visits.

4. See Skylight Music Theatre’s ‘Mamma Mia’

ALLI WATTERS, DIGITAL & CULTURE EDITOR

‘Mamma Mia’ is having a moment this year. For me, the songs from this jukebox musical have been inescapable. I’ve had not one, but two bachelorette party’s themed after the movie, and I even stumbled upon an a cappella group performing an “ABBAmania” concert.” So when I heard that Skylight was doing a live performance, I was ready for “Super Trouper,” “Dancing Queen” and more. You can read my full review here, but here’s my summary: The show is a ton of fun. From the sparkly bell bottoms to the eight-minute singalong post bows, the show is packed with high-energy good times.
