The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Nov. 8

A new mural, suburban hikes and more this week in Milwaukee.

1. Try the Lakefront-Miller High Life Collab

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

For a couple of years now, Molson Coors in the name of its rightfully beloved Miller High Life brand has been collaborating with smaller breweries in Chicago, Philadelphia and Georgia on High Life collaboration beers. So it’s about time that a, you know, Milwaukee brewery got a turn. That collab with Lakefront Brewery dropped last week in the form of The Juicy Life, a lager loaded with lush hop character (that’s the juicy part) that’s meant to evoke the effortless drinkability of the Champagne of Beers. And that mission is certainly accomplished, in this tasty lager with a big tropical fruit aroma. You can try it for yourself at a launch party for The Juicy Life at Miller Time Pub (509 W. Wisconsin Ave.) on Thursday evening.

2. See a Movie at The Oriental

ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR

It had been nearly two years since I set foot in the Oriental Theatre (2230 N. Farwell Ave.), but somehow it didn’t feel that long. The occasion was the release of a new Wes Anderson film, The French Dispatch, an homage to print journalism. It wasn’t my favorite Anderson film (see Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, if you haven’t), but it was a great feeling just being there, soaking up the sounds, the sights and the smells of a big cinema.

Experience an unforgettable evening celebrating great design!

3. Read: H.P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life by Michel Houellebecq

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is indisputably one of the greatest horror writers to ever put pen to paper. His stories created an entire mythology, invented “cosmic horror,” and continue to reverberate through popular culture to this day. (For an obvious example: “Lovecraft Country” on HBO). Michel Houellebecq, the great French chronicler of modern Western society’s decadent decline, first gained attention for writing this 1991 essay on Lovecraft. Houellebecq charts Lovecraft’s themes and preoccupations with expert precision and demonstrates convincingly how Lovecraft’s strange, sad life brought out his most brilliantly bizarre fiction. This slim volume serves as a perfect primer for anyone who hasn’t read Lovecraft, and deepens the appreciation of anyone who has.

4. Check Out the New Mural at the Milwaukee Art Museum

KRISTIN BOWKER, EDITORIAL DESIGNER

Soak up some sun these last warm-ish days – and extra striking views – along MAM’s lakeside path. The museum is now showing “On Site: Derrick Adams: Our Time Together.” The grand mural and installation stretches along the East End, facing the lake through a wall of windows.

5. Go for a Fall Hike, or at Least a Walk

ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR

We’re at the tail end of some pretty jaw-dropping fall colors. Go for a hike – or at least a walk – to take them in. Some of the best places to see them are in our own backyards, which is why we put together a guide to suburban trails. I’ve personally been loving the wooded paths that wind through my neighborhood, the Village of Greendale.
