The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: June 10

Head up to Sheboygan for 3 Sheeps’ anniversary party, check out Discourse’s Pride Month events and more.

1. Make it a day in Sheboygan for the 3 Sheeps’ Anniversary Party

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Here’s a weekend beer pairing idea: 3 Sheeps Brewing’s 12th anniversary party with the John Michael Kohler Art Center. The 3 Sheeps bash promises all you expect from this excellent brewery’s excellent events: Live music on the newly improved stage, great eats from local food trucks and special releases including two anniversary barrel-aged stouts: One More Around the Sun (aged 24 months) and Southern Silk (infused with cacao, vanilla and pecans). Before (or after!) the party, check out the JMKAC, where two new exhibitions recently opened focusing on the 50th anniversary of Kohler’s Arts/Industry program, centered around artist residencies in the Kohler factory. Admission to all the Kohler art facilities is always free. 3 Sheeps party runs 11 a.m.-10 p.m., 1837 North Ave.; JMKAC open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 608 New York Ave.

2. Try a Sweet Sesame Sandwich and Some Loaded Fries From Sandu

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

I’m trying to lose weight. It sucks. I’m hungry all the time. You know what the worst part actually is? I have a very growly stomach. If it’s not fed for a couple hours, it starts making weird, threatening, and somewhat suggestive noises that grow increasingly loud until they are impossible to ignore. In a quiet meeting, it is mortifying – and I have many quiet meetings. “Hey, everyone. Sorry about those sounds, it’s just my disgusting gut. Pay it no mind.” Anyway, Sandu, this new vendor at Zócalo Food Park making Korean fried chicken sandwiches, marks yet another failure in my efforts to trim up. The other week, I tried the Sweet Sesame Sandwich with a side of fries. I really loved the fries. The chicken was a lot for a little guy like me to handle – some thick chicken, ya know what I’m saying. But the flavors were great, and despite my best efforts to stick to broccoli and rice, I will certainly be back soon.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Go to an Event on Discourse’s ‘Gay Agenda’

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the first of four exciting events Discourse Coffee at Radio Milwaukee (158 S. Barclay St.) is hosting for Pride Month. It was a conversation with Evan Szymkowksi (AKA the star of Milwaukee Public Library’s viral social media videos) about creativity and queer culture. I’ve had the honor of collaborating with Evan when we did our MPL x Milwaukee Magazine “Print Isn’t Dead” Reel earlier this year. And my friend and regular Milwaukee Magazine contributor Destiny DeVooght hosted the discussion, so I was absolutely jazzed to attend. It was an inspiring, though-provoking conversation, and it felt incredible to be in a room of local creative people talking about how our identities intersect with our creativity. If that sounds right up your alley – or if you want to learn something new – there’s another discussion this Saturday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. featuring two folks from Allez Cafe

4. Listen to J.P.’s Coming Out Party

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

Earlier this year, Milwaukee rapper J.P. captured lightning in a bottle with “Bad Bitty,” a lowend earworm that took off astronomically on TikTok and elsewhere. Now, the 20-year-old artist (who also plays forward for the UW-Stevens Point basketball team) released his debut album, Coming Out Party. It’s got heaps of fast-paced hand claps and Auto-Tune crooning. He has a knack for delightful melodies that he pairs with humor and feel-good energy. Don’t be surprised if you’re hearing these songs all summer.

5. Eat at the New Paloma in Bay View

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

Sometimes I want bougie (aka, flashy) tacos. Ahi tuna? Cajun shrimp? Fried brussels sprouts? All of the above. And Paloma has it – plus it recently opened a second location, in Bay View (2156 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.). One attraction to this space is the doors open up to a patio with infectious energy. It was rainy the night I was there so no patio action, but tasty food? Yes. The Paloma hot chips – their house-made chips topped with cotija cheese, onions, onions and cilantro, fresh radish sprouts and serrano crema – could be a snack or the main event. So good. And their ahi tuna poke taco hit all the right spots for me – cold and warm, crunchy and creamy. Felt like summer inside a tortilla.
