1. Check Out The Midwest Survival Guide
ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR
By now you may be sick of hearing Milwaukee Magazine raving about Charlie Berens. I mean for cripes sake he was just the cover story in our magazine last month (read that here). But my mother-in-law bought me a copy of his book for Christmas, and I recently started reading it. The coffee table book is stuffed with Wisconsin pride, games and trivia. If that’s your thing, give it a read!
2. Watch Withnail and I
ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR
Obviously, most weekends me and the squad hit the club. Tear it up. Get a little crazy. But this weekend, in a total reversal of my usual wild meerkat energy, I just watched a movie and ate cereal in my underwear. That movie was Withnail and I, a 1987 cult classic, that follows the misadventures of two late-20s failing actors living in squalor. It’s one of the most British movies ever, and the titular Withnail is an absolute delight to watch. Highly recommend. Unless, of course, like myself, you’re living the wild and crazy life of a playboy and are going the get it poppin’ at the club.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
3. Cheer on the Marquette Women’s Basketball Team
ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR
I have a confession to make. I attended Marquette University, but I rarely get to sports events in support of my alma mater. That changed this past Sunday when I hit MU’s Al McGuire Center to watch the women’s basketball team come from behind and score a 50-47 victory over Creighton. It was awesome sitting in the stands supporting not only a school with a personal connection but also tipping my knit hat to women’s sports. The next home game is Sunday Feb. 13 against University of Connecticut.
4. Take a Winter Stroll Through Historic Lake Park
ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR
I’ve been walking Lake Park a lot recently. With the winter temperatures it isn’t very crowded at all, and I’m free to wander to my heart’s content. The park is way more than just a scenic spot. It’s a treasure trove of historical significance and design expertise. How do I know this? Glad you asked. I happen to be writing a big ol’ feature story for our April issue about Frederick Law Olmsted, the man who designed Lake Park in the 1890s. He was a fascinating man, who’s parks shaped the way our city looks today. Did I just turn this editor’s pick into a pitch for our awesome April issue and my deep-dive Olmsted story. Yes, I did, and I’m not sorry. But also, you seriously should take a winter stroll through Lake Park. It’s great.
5. Grab Lunch at Dia y Noche
ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR
I live dangerously close to Dia y Noche, and it’s become especially problematic ever since I discovered their lunch specials. They only have two options, burritos and rice bowls. I’ve tried both, and while the burrito is good, it has nothing on the rice bowl. It comes with fried plantains, avocados, your choice of meat and a yolky egg on top. Oh yeah, and the rice is super yummy too too.
