I love collecting tiny trinkets. Why have one big thing when you can have lots of little things? That’s my ethos for decorating my office desk, anyway. For me, one reliable source for small souvenirs has been MKE’s Littlest Print Shop – machines across the city that give you stamped art in exchange for two quarters. And in case you missed it, Milwaukee Magazine has partnered with the print shop for custom designs you can only find at MOD GEN. I swung by this weekend and snagged one for myself, and you should, too! Show your cubicle some hometown love.
2. Celebrate the Green, White and Orange at Irish Fest

Technically, I’m only about 15% Irish – my great-great-grandfather came from Waterford, Ireland. I’m much more Italian and French Canadian in my genetic makeup … but this weekend, the meatballs and baguettes get swapped out for 100% pure soda bread and cabbage, baby. I love Ireland and I love Irish culture, and Milwaukee’s annual Irish Fest (Aug. 14-17) gives me a chance to celebrate it all. I’m looking forward to some good food, good music and a Jameson or two.

3. Check Out Samin Nosrat’s New Cookbook

Fall is not my time of year (sorry, you lovers of sweaters, apples and crunchy falling leaves). But even I have found something about the season to cheer about: Samin Nosrat’s new cookbook! OK, settle down. It’s just a cookbook. But Samin Nosrat! Author of Salt Fat Acid Heat, surely one of the best cookbooks of the last 15 years! Nosrat’s philosophy – which she espouses in Salt Fat Acid Heat – is that you can be a great cook just by making friends with those four elements in the book’s title. Simple, right? Kind of. With her new book (due Sept. 16), I’m here for the recipes – ricotta custard pancakes, roast chicken with saffron, Calabrian chile crisp focaccia, and others.
