Testing 9Round Fitness

9Round sets itself apart with a one-on-one attention and a workout clocking in at 30 minutes flat. Plus: two burning questions with trainer and owner Drew Stauffacher.

If you are anything like me and have a hard time making it to a group fitness class, or you lose interest in a workout after about 30 minutes, then 9Round is for you.

I stumbled upon this franchise after hearing about it from a busy mom. At first, the term kickboxing turned me off a little, but when I went to check out it for myself at the Brookfield location, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was much more than just roundhouse kicks and upper cuts. “It’s cross between basic kickboxing fundamentals, tabata, circuit training and a boot camp workout,” explained trainer and owner Drew Stauffacher.

You can stop in any time they are open (locations vary, but usually 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.) to get your sweat on and be done in 30 minutes flat. You’ll spend three minutes at nine different stations (hence the name 9Round) doing two different exercises for a targeted muscle group. The whole time you get one-on-one attention from a trainer, even though there are people coming and going. Everyone  integrates seamlessly into the sweaty mix.

I asked seasoned trainer Stauffacher two burning questions:

From all the working out you’ve done, why do you feel the 9Round workout is so effective?

DS: 9Round is just so fun and addicting! You have a trainer with you every step of the way. And the workouts are always changing and evolving so our members are pushed in a different way every single day. In over a decade of training, this is the most fun I’ve had training people. Plus the convenience factor plays a huge role in the success for our members. It’s an amazing 30-minute workout and members can come in at anytime we are open. Every three minutes, we can start someone new into our circuits.

What do people often find the hardest about the program?

DS: The initial barrier of walking through the door is honestly the hardest part. People hear ‘kickboxing gym’ and think they have to be in shape before coming into 9Round. I always say that we are a fitness gym that utilizes kickboxing fundamentals to get you into shape, not the other way around. It’s a great workout for anyone, no matter the age, fitness level, or even if you’ve ever thrown a punch. 9Round trainers are here to get you into shape and help you with your fitness goals no matter what they may be.

But don’t just take Drew’s word for it, Men’s Journal called it one of the “20 Best Workouts in America.”

There are several Milwaukee-area locations for 9Round including New Berlin, Brookfield, Downtown and Whitefish Bay. Visit 9round.com to find a studio close to you and for membership options.
