During the pandemic, Gabriel Kahane did something unthinkable: He unplugged. Kahane’s spent one year off the Internet, and his album Magnificent Bird, documents that final month offline.
The world-renowned New York composer is now bringing the music from that album to Milwaukee for a concert with Present Music, a local music organization that’s known for its imaginative performance experiences.
“It’s very thoughtful music,” Present Music’s co-artistic director Eric Segnitz says. “If you’re familiar with Present Music, it’s a little different show. This will be more like a coffeehouse format.”

The concert will be at the Jan Serr Studio at 7:30 p.m. and on May 31 and June 1. It’s one of the most intimate performances Present Music will put on all year, with Kahane playing guitar, piano and singing vocals alongside a string quartet.
“It’s a rare opportunity,” Segnitz says. “[Kahane] has only been here a handful of times in 15 years and it’s a gorgeous space … It should be a wonderful experience.”
