Once the brick and mortar shop is open for business, you'll always know where to find a pop.

Pete’s Pops, the frozen treat business that brings summer refreshment to farmers markets and festivals, is ready to embark on its brick-and-mortar life. The grand opening festivities for the new shop (3809 W. Vliet St.) are Saturday, August 18, from 12 to 8 p.m.

Owner Pete Cooney started the business with avocado (and other) pops by pushcart back in 2014. He talks about the treat as a catalyst for positive change in the July issue of Milwaukee Magazine. It’s also virtually impossible not to be happy when you have a Pete’s pop in your hand. (The avocado pop was what first got me hooked!) The full menu is vast though, with options ranging from blueberry basil lemonade and roasted peach ’n jalapeno to mango lassi and coffee ’n doughnuts. My partner on the culinary podcast This Bites, Tarik Moody, knows exactly which flavors Pete’s is offering on opening day.

Cooney plans for the shop to be open weekends to start, with the hours previously named (12-8 p.m.). Saturday’s opening is packed with activities, including DJs (12-4 p.m.), giveaways of grilled hot dogs and bottled water and more music scheduled from 4-8 p.m.

The opening day menu promises 24 pop flavors, and the first 24 customers will receive a free T-shirt.
