Alexander Yang is an electrical engineering major at UW-Milwaukee. Shauntia Carson, a first-generation college student, is studying criminology at Marquette University. Erick Torres Gonzalez studies neuroscience and political science at Harvard University.
All three received a $1,000 scholarship from Milwaukee’s Finest Scholarship Foundation, an all-volunteer organization created in 2016 by young Milwaukeeans who want to give back to their community.
“Before, I didn’t apply for many scholarships because I thought no one would believe in me,” says Carson, who was one of the recipients in 2018. Receiving a Milwaukee’s Finest scholarship “made me more confident about my ability to attend college,” she says.
