Location, location. Milwaukee Brewfest sets up shop overlooking Lake Michigan near the old Coast Guard pavilion, and that kind of real estate in late July is hard to beat. The spot is made even better thanks to 70 or so breweries handing out samples. Don’t go looking for too many rarities, but do expect to find roughly 4,000 fellow fans of beer strolling between taps. But Milwaukee Brewfest is one event where it’s an absolute must to follow the veteran rules of buying a VIP ticket and getting there early. “It’s during the peak time of the Milwaukee summer fun,” says Kevin Pelkey, a sales manager with Big Bay Brewing.

July 27. McKinley Park. 1600 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr., 414-321-5000, milwaukeebrewfest.com.
