Two Milwaukee Food Events for Ramadan

Plus, several local restaurants are open with special hours.

Ramadan – the ninth month of the Islamic lunar year – began the evening of March 10. For Muslims, it’s a month of prayer, reflection and fasting, from dawn to sunset. The evening meal to break the fast is called Iftar. The pre-dawn meal is called Suhoor. Ramadan lasts for 30 days.

Several restaurants in the area are open special hours for Ramadan. Two events are happening – Suhoor Saturdays, which features five restaurants offering Suhoor meals between 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. on every Saturday during Ramadan; and Suhoor Food Truck Festival, happening March 29 (10 p.m.-2 am.) at the ISM Community Center, 807 W. Layton Ave.

There will also be live kunafa, henna stands, games and trivia.

Also, Eat Halal MKE has a database of restaurants that serve foods that are halal – meaning the foods are considered lawful or permitted by Islamic law

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
