Same As It Ever Was by Robert Meincke
Makeal Flammini and Robert Meincke tied as winners of the Emerging Artist People’s Choice award at the Wilson Center’s Hidden River Art Festival in 2012. Their prizes? Their own shows. Flammini’s new series, “The Bricks are Dipped in Marble Dust,” was created while she spent nine months on Ireland’s west coast. She’d draw and write, then sell the missives on Facebook to earn money for her return flight. She sold 200 pieces and made a book of the drawings. Meincke paints revolutionaries set over newspaper articles (above), creating compelling political works – always with a dark cast. Sure, these two are an odd couple, but each uses art to engage more deeply with their worlds.
