Watch out for runners, clickers and bloaters this Halloween weekend!
From Oct. 26-29, Bay View cocktail bar Lost Whale will transform into the world of The Last of Us for a Halloween pop-up.
The bar will be decorated in the stylings of the post-apocalyptic world of the beloved 2013 and 2020 video games, and the 2023 HBO series based on them. The pop-up takes inspiration from both the show and the game, with themed cocktails on offer, as well as decor.
The bar’s interior will be fully decorated with Cordycep-covered walls and hanging vines, and they will be serving six new cocktail creations, based on the staff’s favorite moments from the show and games.
There’ll be a torched cinnamon cocktail accompanied with temporary firefly tattoos for those who want to rise up against FEDRA; a mushroom-centric drink; and a cocktail inspired by the frustration many gamers faced playing The Last of Us, named “Where the eff is the generator?”.
Maria Westfall, Lost Whale’s general manager, said that name was the hardest to land on. “Ultimately the staff agreed the generator moments top the difficult moments [in the game], followed only behind the bloaters you face,” Westfall said.
Another cocktail will be based on the heart-wrenching third episode of the show, which follows fan-favorite character Bill – Westfall notes that that they can respect a man who knows to pair rabbit with Beaujolais.
Lost Whale has done Halloween pop-ups before, including last year’s based on the FX vampire comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows.” Westfall says that in the past, the team has tended toward humor when creating their pop-ups, “We laugh along the way while putting them together,” Westfall said. “[The Last of Us pop-up] is the first time our staff gets to showcase the other side of our nerdiness.”
