The first conversation Kate Smith has with her clients may not be what you expect. The owner of k.smith x design firm says that discussion is often all about lifestyle – pets, family, guests, pastimes, etc.
These topics help her craft a space that not only looks good, but fits a client’s lifestyle. Do you cook a lot, drink red wine or coffee? Then maybe marble countertops aren’t for you – they stain easily. Is it just you and your partner living in the house? Then consider minimizing your dining are if you don’t entertain.
“The goal is to support how you function in the space,” says Smith, who works with homeowners and businesses across the country. “Design can seem overwhelming, but the home that’s right for you is really within reach.”
Smith’s “Svart Hus” home project, shown above, is a showcase for her philosophy, elevating the space with striking details and seamless design. She supports clients in any phase of their project, helping make choices that match their aesthetic and lifestyle.
Smith is launching two collaborations this summer – a lighting collection with Fenway Clayworks and a series of tables with Rovan Hand-Crafted Furniture, available in July. The firm is also opening its first showroom this year, in Ellison Bay. The studio space will house the collection, as well as host pop-ups throughout the summer.
Smith is also collaborating on a hospitality concept in Door County that is projected to open in spring of 2025. In addition to her design work, Smith also offers virtual consultations for homeowners. “Often times people are knee-deep in their projects and could really use support and guidance,” she says. “A consultation is an accessible way to figure out a roadmap for your project. Beautiful design doesn’t have to be unattainable.
