On an average day, 500 people call the Impact 2-1-1 line — people who, most likely, are having the worst time of their lives.

“They’re in crisis. They tell us they don’t have food, or a place to stay, or wonder whether they should keep on living,” says John Hyatt, Impact president and CEO. “We think of ourselves as social service first responders. We help them in that moment to stabilize and catch their breath.”

After catching their breath, callers are directed to whatever help they might need, whether finding housing or substance abuse treatment or legal help. To make that referral, Impact relies on its extensive network of collaborative relationships with other nonprofits, businesses, funders and community stakeholders.

With a staff of 72 and operating in nine southeastern Wisconsin counties, it is the largest and broadest first responder in Wisconsin.
