How Milwaukee Film Is Celebrating Women’s History Month

Milwaukee Film is spotlighting female filmmakers all of March.

Milwaukee Film will highlight women throughout March with a vibrant catalog of screenings that all follow the theme of the month: “Woman Is Not a Genre.” The films will vary in genre and style, observing the scope of female filmmakers.

“We’ve got something for everyone on screen this month,” says Milwaukee Film’s Artistic Director, Cara Ogburn. “From romance to the supernatural to musicals, animation and beyond!”

The Oriental Theatre will hold eight diverse screenings including 1975’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, a work of French slow cinema that was voted the best film of all time in the 2022 poll held by the film magazine Sight & Sound. Titles will also include beloved 2008 musical, Mamma Mia! and 2002 New Zealand drama, Whale Rider.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Tonya Lewis Lee, director of acclaimed 2022 documentary, Aftershock, will be in attendance for an after-show discussion with filmgoers on March 24. Admission for the film, which spotlights Black experiences in the U.S. maternal health crisis, will be free that day in cooperation with Milwaukee Film’s Black Birth Symposium on March 25.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12, with discounts for seniors, students and Milwaukee Film members. This is the full lineup for the Women’s History Month screenings at the Oriental Theatre:
