How a Photographer Snapped This Incredible Shot of the Northern Lights

Remember when we could see the aurora borealis earlier this year? Photographer Jason Steumpges got this shot.

Pro landscape photographer Jason Stuempges was in the right place at the right time when the aurora borealis appeared across North America on May 10-11. Stuempges was back in his dark-sky hometown of Coon Valley, preparing for an art show in La Crosse that weekend.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

He’s shot the northern lights before, but this display was the largest and most dynamic he’s ever seen. “You could see them directly above you.

The lights were much brighter, and you could see more vibrant greens and even some reds and magentas with the naked eye,” he says. “It was quite beautiful to witness in person.”

This frame, with the aurora silhouetting one of the Driftless Area’s many hills and a lone tree, was one of several he captured during two hours of shooting that night.
