How a Photographer Got This Shot of the Lake’s “Arctic Sea Smoke”

A brisk January day made for a beautiful frosty scene over the lake.

You may not remember the date, but you remember Jan. 14. After a mild winter, the area was blanketed in more than a foot of wet, heavy snow from two storms; then, that Sunday, temperatures plunged below zero. Milwaukee photographer Robert Remme ventured to the pier near the Hoan Bridge with hopes of capturing a memorable shot of the “Arctic sea smoke” that forms when particularly cold air sucks up the moisture from open water. Remme hit the jackpot, coming back with this image of steam clouds dwarfing the 53-foot Breakwater Lighthouse as the sun cast a deceptively warm glow on its frozen facade.
