How a Photographer Captured This Perfectly Timed Sunrise Shot

The sun sits perfectly inside the head of the ‘Spillover II’ sculpture in Atwater Park.

Spillover II, artist Jaume Plensa’s 8.5-foot figure made of steel letters, seems to ponder the expanse of Lake Michigan from its pedestal atop Atwater Park in Shorewood. The sculpture has long intrigued Oconomowoc-based photographer John Hart, who has captured a series of images of celestial objects behind Spillover II’s letter-latticed form – a rising sun suggesting a heart, a moon creating a halo effect behind its head.

Hart, a staff photographer for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, photographed this blazing, dramatic sun in September. “While my daily assignments are mostly documentary in nature, my personal work continues to evolve as I explore quieter, more introspective and aesthetically guided images.”
