How a Photographer Captured This Dusky Downtown Picture

Photographer Nate Vomhof captured the vibrant space between the river and lake.

Milwaukee photographer Nate Vomhof has always been intrigued by this unusual perspective of the city’s skyline, with the Historic Third Ward in the foreground.

“I think there’s something special about how the river sort of wraps around the Third Ward and shoots north through Downtown,” he says.

The new skyscrapers rising in this shot from last October (the riverfront 333 Water and the lakeside Couture) add to an already dense field of visual interest: the placid river, the cruise ship, the throwback shoe polish sign, the Northwestern Mutual peekaboo, the palette-shifting sunset.

“The golden glow evokes energy,” Vomhof says, “and the cranes in the skyline show that the city is growing and showing progress while also giving a nod to the city’s rich history with the ghost signs and old architecture.”
