This time of year, most college students are applying for summer internships and hitting up their favorite Downtown bars one last time before finals ensue. Milwaukee Area Technical College baking students, on the other hand, are getting competitive. They’ve concocted 38 gingerbread houses to be displayed at the Milwaukee Public Market (400 N. Water St.), Dec. 2-13.
That’s right, the public market – specifically, the market’s second floor – is turning into a gingerbread wonderland this weekend. All of the houses will be on display, and the public can bid on them via a silent auction through Dec. 13. Proceeds support MATC scholarship funding.
Thirty-one of the creations resemble more traditional gingerbread houses but are finished off with vibrant colors and elaborate detail. Four of the baked architectural designs replicate the Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park stadium. The other three entries are modeled after the new Milwaukee Bucks arena.
On the final day of the display, baking pros, sports representatives and architects will judge each entry and announce the winner. These students are after more than just bragging rights. Triumphant bakers take home scholarships, but their fate isn’t solely in the hands of the judges. The community is asked to vote on their favorite designs from the classic displays and the sports-centric models. Each “People’s Choice” winner will also receive a scholarship.
Even though formal celebrations occur on the last day, anyone is welcome to vote, bid and enjoy the entries once the showcase begins. These gingery delights are sure to make your lunch break a little more festive.
