You’re likely familiar with the Café Hollander restaurants and their siblings, Café Benelux and Centraal Grand Cafe & Tappery. The restaurants’ parent company, Lowlands Group, has announced it’ll add two new restaurants and a beer garden, all in Greenfield, to its empire.
The new businesses will be located at The Lokal, part of the 50-acre, mixed-use 84South development at 84th and Layton. Construction is expected to begin this spring, with projected opening for the restaurants in late 2023 or early 2024.
The project features the creation of another Café Hollander location (one level, spanning 8,800 square feet), a new project called The Feisty Loon – with an Up North theme similar to another Lowlands restaurant, Buckatabon in Tosa – and an outdoor dining space/beer garden that’ll offer brick-oven pizza, ice cream and a drink menu of craft cocktails, beer and slushies. In that outdoor area, they also plan to host community events, sports viewing, live music and outdoor yard games.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to develop our most ambitious project so far in Greenfield,” said Lowlands CEO Eric Wagner in a press release. “We spent months getting to know the community, and we really hope to deliver an amenity that will serve as a gathering place for the entire area. This great corner is going to be highly activated, and our guests will be able to bounce between the restaurants and the outdoor space and make an entire evening or a whole day out of it.”
They describe The Feisty Loon as the “playful junior of Buckatabon and equally reminiscent of beloved memories Up North.” At 9,300 square feet, it will seat 300 inside and out. The project is a throwback to the 1950s and ‘60s – “mid-century modern meets eclectic and fun design.” It’ll serve brunch, fish fries, prime rib, burgers, cocktails and beer, among other things.
The design team includes Kubala Washatko Architects and Three Sixty, which has worked with Lowlands on previous projects.
