Plan your summer adventure with the Travel Issue!

Let’s Explore

Sometimes it takes an “outsider” to make us appreciate what we have. This year, the Apostle Islands were named one of the 50 best places to visit by Travel + Leisure. We had already been considering a story about this unique Wisconsin destination, but that may have been the little nudge we needed to pull the trigger. And after reading our story (page 54), I’m making plans for a September trip. We are so fortunate to have so much natural beauty in our state.

This issue is dedicated to the wonders of our region, both natural and manmade. The day trips feature (page 42) offers an amazing assortment of places to visit in close proximity to Milwaukee. Food is a big motivator for me, so the “Restaurants Worth the Drive” portion of that feature is of particular interest. I can’t wait to try Pete’s Hamburger Stand, Kroll’s East (more hamburgers!) and the potato pancake at Norske Nook. And the giant ribeye known as the Tomahawk Experience at Bootleggers Lodge up north does have me intrigued.

Tell us who you’d pick to be a Betty this year!

I save my big trips for the fall and winter, because I don’t want to miss out on our glorious Midwestern summers. The ideas in this issue allow me to satisfy my wanderlust without venturing too far from home. I can’t wait to start exploring.

On a completely different subject, if you love animals, turn to page 38 immediately and check out the off-the-charts cuteness of Harlow the dog consulting with animal attorney Joe Goode. After you’ve had your fill of gazing at that photo, be sure to read the article. It’s good to know that animals are getting the legal defense they deserve!
