Culture Calendar: December

’Tis the season for cheeky comedy, winter festivals and plenty of song.

Amu-SchumerAmy Schumer
➸ Dec. 4
We like to think the only thing that could top Amy Schumer’s momentous year is coming to the BMO Harris Bradley Center to delight Milwaukeeans with her irreverent shtick that strikes every of-the-moment cultural nerve.

Festive Soiree with Robin Pluer
➸ Dec. 4-12
Robin Pluer, our local queen of cabaret, tackles Edith Piaf’s repertoire and other French classics at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Gardens, Gods, & Grids: Retracing Nature, Culture, & Infrastructure in the Americas
➸ Dec. 4-Feb. 26
Milwaukeean Dara Larson’s mixed-media work – wood carvings, kirigami paper creations, prints and more – is rich in detail and often based on her global travels. That’s the focus for this exhibit at the United Community Center’s Latino Arts Gallery.

Heart
➸ Dec. 7
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are back just two years after their last Milwaukee show at the Wisconsin State Fair. If that performance was any indication, Ann can still hit the high notes and Nancy hasn’t lost her acoustic touch. Will the Riverside Theater be able to contain their brand of rowdy rock? Consider it your sworn duty to find out.

Black Nativity
➸ Dec. 10-13
The Marcus Center and the Black Arts Think Tank have teamed up to bring Christmas carols in a gospel style via Langston Hughes’ groundbreaking play of the same name.

Dianne Reeves
➸ Dec. 12
Although you might not have heard Reeves accompany the Berlin Philharmonic, there’s a chance you heard her belt out the soundtrack for George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck (2005). She’ll bring that vocal power to the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts for an evening of jazzy
holiday tunes.

Winter Festival at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin
➸ Dec. 12
The state is full of winter festivals, but there’s none better for the design-savvy than the Winter Festival at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin in Spring Green. Usually closed for the winter, the estate is opening for a single day of wagon rides, piping hot sips and all of the Prairie-
School trivia your head can hold.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
➸ Dec. 16-31
Copious family time during the holidays can often necessitate a break for levity. Our solution? A trip to Dale Gutzman’s Off-the-Wall Theatre, which stages the classical comedy this month, sure to help alleviate your winter blues.
