As if peering through a rain-soaked windshield in the painting Missing Bridge in Storm (below), a heavy slate blue background is broken up by a colorful pattern of simple horizontal dashes, creating the illusion of ships afloat in a body of water surrounded by a cool night’s horizon. This piece displays the strengths in Peter Barrickman’s work: bold use of color, decisive yet playful. And it feels current – undoubtedly an effect of his self-proclaimed artistic process of “giving into the times in which we live.” A Milwaukeean whose work has been exhibited at London’s Tate Modern, Barrickman displays his most recent work at Green Gallery East beginning Nov. 10.
