This Bites: Happy Hour Burgers, State Fair Foods and More

The culinary podcast featuring 88Nine’s Tarik Moody and MilMag’s Ann Christenson talking about all things dining-related.

This week’s edition of This Bites, the culinary podcast on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, should be your first stop before jumping into the weekend. And there’s a lot happening next week, too, including the start of Wisconsin State Fair (Thursday, Aug.1). But that’s for later in our segment.

In our first bit, we talk about the “Happy Hour Burger Face-off” appearing in MilMag’s August issue. Four local restaurants are offering great burgers so it was tough deciding which one is best. But you’ll find out in our podcast.

If you’ve been thinking about schnitzel and spanferkel lately (who hasn’t been?), Germanfest is here. It’s your destination for beer, pretzels, the afore-mentioned food items and other things Tarik and I will tell you about. Mostly things you can put in your mouth.

It’s birthday time! The Cheel is celebrating its fifth B-day this weekend, and DanDan’s third birthday party is this Tuesday, July 30. Head to The Cheel on Saturday (July 27) for a pretty much all-day celebration, and to DanDan on Tuesday night for a pig roast – details in our podcast.

Tarik and I round out the segment with the new foods at this year’s Wisco State Fair. Snake soup. Breakfast-on-a-stick. There’s so much to talk about here. And also the new Brookfield cinema, Silverspot Theater. It features quite the extensive food and drink menus. Martinis, mojitos, craft beers, NY strip steaks. They’re banking on the one-stop dinner-and-a-movie crowd.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
