Art and Fashion Go the Distance…

In this era of temporary unions, like the widely chronicled 72-day nuptial bliss of Kim Kardashian and what’s his name, a real partnership that mellows, deepens, and becomes co-dependent for eternity seems a rarity. But art and fashion have forever been in a committed, long-term relationship.  Fashion icon Lady Gaga recently wore a “meat dress” on the red carpet. Was this a garment, or was it an artistic statement? Performance art, which would include the way we dress, will for all time reflect society and the whole of civilization in one way or another. The decorative arts have always been a…

Oxfords for Spring and Summer 2012…..

Porter Grey, designed and founded by two sisters, Alexandra and Kristen O’Neill, is a traditional sportswear company with contemporary overtones. For spring and summer this year they featured fabulous footwear inspired by both saddle shoes, and saucy men’s oxfords. I loved the look of these lace ups with everything from maxi dresses to high-waist shorts. Fresh looking and heel-free they bring back an era of bobby-soxers and wistful romanticism to even the most fashion forward frocks. The luscious patent leathers, and combinations of denim and leather will add instant panache to whatever you choose to sport them with. The overall…

Boldly Blending Patterns in a Powerful Palette

One of my favorite collections for Spring 2012 was brought to life by the whimsical mind of designer Chris Benz.  His mastery of print mixing and color blocking isn’t for the faint of heart, but that is his gift and genius.   At the same time, his use of soft draping juxtaposed with more tailored pieces plus casual accessorizing made his collection both relevant and accessible.  Taking cues from the 60’s through the 80’s with a little bit of 40’s glamour thrown in, he put it all in the blender and came up with a winner.    A piece from this…

Native Son Recreates the Modern Man…..

Native Son menswear, designed by Kyle Fitzgibbons, has continually been in pursuit of dressing the modern man.  This season Native Son posed the question of what it means to create a brand that is perfectly balanced in its ability to reference the past, exist in the present, and look forward to the future.   Fall/Winter 2012 marks the first of a four season collaboration with North Carolina based Raleigh Denim.  The collaboration was birthed out of a desire to develop a product that was rooted in American culture, and manufacture it in the same way it was when jeans were…
