Before Stanley Kubrick dusted off the Strauss waltzes to score his dancing space stations in 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction movie music was a bunch of bleeps and bloops, a fitting accompaniment to pie-plate-on-a-string special effects. But these days, boldly going anywhere requires a full symphonic ensemble on the soundtrack and an A-list composer on the closing credits. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Pops will present “Sci-Fi Spectacular,” a tribute to the music of Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek hosted by Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei. Paul Kosidowski is a freelance writer and critic who contributes regularly to Milwaukee Magazine, WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio and national arts magazines. In 2007, he was a fellow with the NEA Theater and Musical Theater Criticism Institute at the University of Southern California.
