What Would Jerry Do?

What Would Jerry Do?

I’ve made my way into the renowned Grateful Dead bar, Thurman’s 15 (1731 N. Arlington Pl.), a few times now. Not sure why I’ve been back. My first experience was average, save the drunkard at the bar who was completely out of his mind trying to lay a sideways move on my friend. The Dead were playing and the jukebox holds all your jam band favorites. Neon Ben and Jerry’s signage decorates the bar window. Dead paraphernalia as far as the eye can see; and here, WWJD stands for “What Would Jerry Do?” I get it—hippie bar. I was leaving…

I was leaving the Hi-Hat (1701 N. Arlington Pl.) one night when another friend and I decided to stop in Thurman’s for a quick beer on our way elsewhere. This occasion was particularly crowded as we searched and found an opening at the end of the bar. Something wasn’t right—tequila, taps and tumblers were without a bartender. We waited. Maybe they’re changing out a keg? Time passed uncomfortably with a bar full of glasses half empty. Bathroom break? No. Hitting a bong in the basement? Probable. After a 10-minute wait or so with no employee in sight, we left.

Going back was like listening to Phish’s take on The White Album (which I fell victim to my third time back). I could barely deal with a cringe-worthy “Don’t Ask Me Why” cover and just when I thought things could get worse, a brooding voice attempted “Why Don’t We do it in the Road.” Spare me, please.

On that third trip, I was surrounded by some filthy folk. I’m no stranger to skipping a shower, but mixing the funk with patchouli doesn’t produce a killer combo. This time around wasn’t too crowded, and the shuffleboard table looked appealing. They also have a dartboard amidst the wood paneling and poster-lacquered walls, which always pleases me.

I’ve been privy to other stories surrounding the hippie dive that turn me off. For one, the crowd is generally young—too young. I’ve heard of someone getting kicked out on-sight for wearing a Cubs hat, which doesn’t sound like hippie behavior. And music is big for me. I can deal with Workingman’s Dead and some old live shows, but Trey Anastasio has a wretched voice.

Take this information however you like. I don’t think I’ll be back.
