“Pleasingly glossy, refreshingly snarky and startlingly sexy.” Ruth McCann, Washington Post
“The Ugly Truth is insulting to women, men and even goldfish.” Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald
Star of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Heigl plays a hopelessly single but successful TV producer who reluctantly agrees to be coached on relationships by an easy-going, chauvinistic relationship expert (Butler) in this often crude romantic comedy. The onslaught of potentially offending dirty jokes are expected because The Ugly Truth is a battle-of-the-sexes tale about how the hearts of men and women are in two different places; but, the stereotypical characters and unoriginal story that lazily classifies all men as noncommittal and all women as desperate are not welcome. Heigl and Butler have a natural chemistry and often produce appealing banter, but the movie lacks realism and veers too much into lame sitcom territory.
