This overhyped romantic comedy stars the well-matched witty duo of Bullock and Reynolds, but the story of the uptight city girl thrust in the wilderness who falls for her foe is all too familiar. Here Bullock is Margaret Tate, an uptight, successful book editor who forces her diligent assistant, Andrew, to marry her in order to avoid deportation to Canada. Irksomely similar to her character in 1995’s While You Were Sleeping, the solitary Margaret encounters a loving albeit crazy family when she enters the fake engagement. Though there’s some funny moments and Bullock’s quite amusing, Margaret and Andrew’s unrealistic relationship and the overall lack of complexity makes for a not so tempting Proposal.
